media confrence

Lecture 1
Media is seen to be a soft subject, nevertheless people may be proven wrong as statistics show that less people do as well as expected in media, this conveys that it is quite difficult. However people still feel that it is easier to pass and should receive fewer points. Private schools are shunning media as they want their students to peruse on a hard and academic subject.
Media is studied in the top universities and is a great subjects as you need to be creative and think very hard about all different aspects involved. Being a media student allows you to be constructive and think why camera angles are directed in a certain way, the use of a background and how it links to the film, etc. Furthermore being a media student allows you to ask “why?” instead of being a passive media consumer, this indicates how studying media allows students to create their own perceptive opinions and become inquisitive in the ideas of why things are the way they are.
Media is quite alike to English literature, this is because in English you allow yourself to think critically, similarly you think this way in media in order to understand and create ideas on something. Media students generally are liked by employees as it suggests the student may be creative, they are confident, have good presentational skills and are responsible. Moreover, team-work is often in work related to media, to be able to work well within a team is identified as a good attribute by employers etc.
Lecture 2
Online media is making the world more democratic, online gaming, online news, films, these all reflect convergence (the coming together of media technologies). Portability has increased as well as interactivity. As news comes in the form of mobile phones and laptops, newspapers are slowly becoming less valued and are used less if media goes to 2.0. It is more convenient to get the news wherever you are. Instead of going to a shop and buying a newspaper.
Web 2.0 is available and this affects people as they are able to create blogs and pass on their work and ideas. Social networks are becoming more apparent and are further developing and becoming very popular amongst people, especially young people. It is easily accessible and the world is becoming smaller because of the internet. Links and tagging have been used which is another feature of 2.0.
Lecture 3
Research and plan is needed to create a great production. Look at real examples to compare to your own work and improve it as well as making it appropriate to your target audience. Also you need to keep the evidence to prove that you have done your research. Look at every angle, furthermore look at the different types of conventions, audiences and institutions.
Things can go wrong and this is all a part of making a production. Record all of your planning-visuals and show the process of your journey to show what you have done, additionally you can evaluate it and perform analysis in order to make it better.
Blogging and evidence is another key concept in making the best media production, blogs allow you to link examples, ideas and inspiration. Evidence is key to show how you constructed your ideas i.e. storyboards and animates.
Also, Ideas and feedback, best to keep them simple, make sure you can create concepts, make them easy and available. It is good to get feedback from teachers and other peers, take both positive and negative feedback in order to make the best production possible. Take ideas on board and don’t take them in the wrong way as the points are made to only help.
Logistics and equipment is needed, places, props and costumes, it is best to get it done early and then start making your changes and editing. Rehearse and prepare to make it as best as possible and not forgetting professional. Practice on how to use the equipment, start with the big picture and then go on to the fine tune details later.

How the Reebok advert promotes violence and crime

How the Reebok advert promotes violence and crime
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/6PZdJc8x6Dc?fs=1&amp;hl=en_GB"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/6PZdJc8x6Dc?fs=1&amp;hl=en_GB" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
·         Media language
The way the advert is conveyed to represent crime is the use of a well known figure 50 cent. 50 cent wears clothes which conveys him to look like a gangster and bad iconic figure which would create a negative impact to younger people who may inspire to be like him.
50 cent comes across as arrogant an uncaring as the question is asked of him “who do you plan to massacre next?” he laughs which shows he doesn’t concern him.
The lighting used is to a minimal as it creates an urban background where harmful people may be found in alleys near trains. The flash of red represents crime.
The use of digetic sounds when 50 cent laughs and looks at the camera suggests that the audience is next, were next.
The voice over narrator is counting and telling us what has happened at each number, it tells us what the crime was furthermore is sound like a police station which adds more to represent this advert as violent as it involves police.
·         Ideology
There are elements are still traditional as the adverts portray 50 cent in a bullet proof vest and the background stereotypes where black people would hang out furthermore they are tagged with the stereotypes of causing and creating the most crime.
·         Genre
This advert represents a gangster advert which links to teenagers who are out on the street without a purpose of living.
·         Representations
50 cent represents many black people who go around creating crime and problem for communities, the use of the counting creates suspense. This is digetic and it convinces the audience that 50 cent is invincible as he has been shot 9 times and it reflects the brand of RBK and no matter how many problems they have within the company, RBK still manage to create an indestructible products and this is conveyed by the gunshots and how 50 cent is still standing. This creates a negative view on the audience as it is linked to violence with the urban background and props furthermore the blood. “I am what I am” 50 cent is trying to create a new bad identity for people and if you don’t follow the identity which 590 cent represents then your next
·         Audience
This is advertised at teenagers also this maybe advertised at black people who see 50 cent as an iconic black figure which is represented by the low camera angle shot which connotes that 50 cent is superior.

The reason why rebook may glamorise violence in their advert is to create controversy and by doing so it will appeal to a lot of people as many people will talk about the advert and this will publicise Reebok as a company and brand furthermore create more sales for themselves.

The advert was banned due to the advert glamorising guns culture, which highlighted the fact that the artist had been shot nine times, was not suitable to be broadcast. I think advert was right to be banned due to what it was promoting and in the way it was representing it via bullet shots and blood.

Dominant and Alternative representations

How alternative ideology is used in films
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Vb8xuRATTIo?fs=1&amp;hl=en_GB"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Vb8xuRATTIo?fs=1&amp;hl=en_GB" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
1.       Lynx piped piper (the lynx effect) this is produced by the lynx company and they have created this advertisement to attract people to buy their product which are males.
2.       The lynx effect advert creates women to be an alternative ideology which is interested by the subordinate groups the way this adverts shows women to be is followers and less dominant which is a stereotype and it’s easy for the male to attract a woman by spraying the lynx.  In contrast the male who sprays the lynx has become the main attraction by him being followed and this conveys control which is a stereotype for males.
3.       Woman are portrayed as desperate and weak in this advert as it is so easy for the dominant person to engage women, just by spraying the spray the women have shown that the stereotype they possess is true and the males are dominant which is conveyed by the stereotype they have been tagged with.
4.       The reason why this alternative ideology is conveyed in this advert is to attract the subordinate group. And the whole effect of lynx connotes that you will be popular amongst the ladies and is more appealing than other people as women leave guys to follow the dominant male in the advert.
5.       The reason this advert is portrayed to say that you don’t need a lot of money to become popular and dominant. Furthermore this advert is aimed at males from young teenagers to a much higher age the reason why this advert has a big target audience is because this product would appeal to all males and they would want to represent the stereotype of powerful and dominant. The advert is used to appeal to people who do not convey their love to their partner, so spraying lynx will make them become confident and bold.
<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KV-48hASWfo?fs=1&amp;hl=en_GB"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KV-48hASWfo?fs=1&amp;hl=en_GB" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
1.       The L’Oreal Paris elvive advert is produced by the people who created the shampoo and this advert is used to boost sales of their product.
2.       The L’Oreal Paris elvive advert is used to convey an alternative ideology as the use of a woman conveys this and this would interest a subordinate group and this advert shows women as important as they would like to have their hair shimmer furthermore is shows woman as being significant “because where worth it”. Furthermore it makes their hair stronger which connotes that women when using the shampoo will make the women dominant chased around by men.
3.       The woman is portrayed as independent and happy by using the product and other people would buy the product to become more dominant. Cheryl Cole is shown looking beautiful which would allow other women to look beautiful and men would chase them around. This advert disagrees with the stereotypes given to women.
4.       This representation is chosen to convey women as more of a dominant ideology rather than an alternative ideology. And this attracts the subordinate group to show that they can become more influential in society. And this makes the product seem to change people to make them more attractive and less shy.
5.       The L’Oreal Paris elvive advert is produced to target a wide range of women and this may attract teenagers as well and this used to make them the subject matter. And this advert creates a new stereotype for women and makes them seem more sophisticated and intelligent. This advert is good to create more buoyancy amongst women.

Banned Advets

The first advert banned by the asa was a beer advert and the reason why this was banned as it seemed to imply that the beer leads to social or sexual success. There is a strapline used “is a ram’s world” which shows the young drinkers as the ram which is the important point of female attention.
I would agree that this advert is banned as it advertises sexual with beer and the asa has become stricter with what is being consumed by the audience which is why this advert was banned.
Another advert which also had criticism is the 50 cent advert which conveys the use of a weapon this is provoking the use of the weapon and as 50 cent is well known and a role model it may aspire people to become this type of person which is why the advert should be banned furthermore 50 cent is holding a baby implies that the baby would grow up to be bad.
I think this advert is bad as using a baby and a weapon in an adverts sends of the bad messages some people may disagree as this advert could be used to convey that people should not have weapons around children and babies.
Another advert which was ordered of TV screen was the Kit Kat advert which showed Father Christmas fat from eating to many mince pies and Kit Kat have tried to show their product as being low in calories and making the chocolate biscuit seem healthier.
The asa said that the 107 calories claim in the context of Father Christmas putting weight on and this gives the misleading impression that the kit Kat is low in energy.

media awards trailer review

The first media production which I though was really well done was the night has a thousand eyes and the genre for this film was a romantic and horror. The way that that there was romance is with the male and female attitudes and action which convince the audience it is a romance furthermore the way it is horror is because of the settings and surroundings the trailer was filmed in. The primary audience is 15 certificates. The film is positive as somewhat of it does reflect society as a lot people are framed by others for a crime they did not commit. There is use of pleasure in some scenes which make the trailer inappropriate for the males and females under the age certificate. Furthermore enigma codes are used to convey love and romance.
The second film which i though was good is chainmail and the genre of this film was horror. The reason why it is horror is because there are killing scenes which relate to scary scenes. The primary audience is 15 certificates. This is very current which is positive as it allows people to relate to it and this film is about people going on social network and getting harmed. And this sends out the message to be careful when you go online and talk to people.

Shrek 2

Shrek 2
The film which I have chosen to analyse is Shrek the main reason why I choose this film is because it represent the best possible example to portray the two narrative theories Todorov and Vladimir. This film goes in an order of beginning, middle and end this is known as a linear pattern. This is the progression to a resolution.
The first theory is todorov and this is his theory of how a film should be sequenced and his theory is split into three which is equilibrium, existing state of harmony. Disequilibrium, what is going wrong is order disrupted and lastly new equilibrium where harmony exists once more.
The equilibrium of Shrek 2 is that he is happy with his life as in the previous Shrek film he liked the princess who he rescued however she was meant to marry lord farquaad but instead choose to marry Shrek the ogre. So Shrek is happy with his life, living with his wife in the swamp happily ever after. This is the existing state of harmony.
The equilibrium is soon disrupted by the disequilibrium. The way this is conveyed in the film is by Fiona parents asking Shrek and Princess Fiona to visit the parents in their castle and this unsettles the mood of the film as Shrek does not want to go and meet Fiona’s as he is happy the way his life is. So they decide to go and there is action codes used when the family is eating around the table as Shrek and the dad are looking at each other and are trying to make them more dominant and powerful. Furthermore enigma codes are used to convey hatred to each other and how they do not like being in each other’s presence. Furthermore there are more problems that will occur upon Shrek and Fiona’s marriage. The reason for this is the fairy godmother wants Princess Fiona to marry her son prince charming therefore the fairy godmother tries to convince Princess Fiona to marry her son and her dad herald also wants prince charming to marry Princess Fiona. Love between prince charming and Princess Fiona by enigma codes. Shrek feels that princess Fiona does not love him so he gets the potion which would turn him into a human and he is willing to do this to portray his love for Princess Fiona again enigma codes are used as people don’t why Shrek changed himself. But Shrek changing himself works to the advantage of prince charming as princess Fiona thinks Shrek is prince charming because the potion changes Shrek to a human. When the real Shrek goes to see Princess Fiona he is arrested. The climax is where Shrek has to stop prince charming kissing Princess Fiona otherwise princess Fiona will love prince charming,
The new equilibrium is followed when Shrek and Princess Fiona kiss they turn back into an ogre and after the fairy godmother tries to turn Shrek into a frog but reflects of heralds shield and makes the fairy godmother disappear the evil forces are defeated and harmony exists once more with Shrek and Fiona living happily ever after.
Shrek also pursue Vladimir’s theory to a certain level. His theory was found by looking at the roles of characters in Russian fairytales. These roles consisted of
·         The villain-creates complication
·         The donor-gives hero something
·         The helper-helps hero restores resolution
·         The princess- saved by the hero
·         The dispatcher-sends hero on task
·         The hero-saviour
·         The false hero-appears to be good but is bad all along

·         The villain-fairy Godmother
·         The donor-donkey
·         The helper-donkey
·         The princess-princess Fiona
·         The dispatcher
·         The hero-Shrek
·         The false hero-Prince charming

Two characters play more than one role, for example Donkey. He plays the Helper as he assists the Hero Shrek and also plays the donor as he reminds Shrek he loves Princess Fiona; Shrek has to save the Princess Fiona from liking prince charming; prince charming the evil villain as he tries to make Princess Fiona like him.

Significant facts

1.       Online readers- in the last 5 years unique readers of online people is up by 30 million
This is significant as it shows how the internet has become so apparent in everyone’s lives and this also tells us that newspaper circulation is starting to decrease if the internet news is being used more frequently.

2.       More videos were uploaded to YouTube in the last two months than if abc, nbc has been airing new content 24/7/365 since 1948.
This is a very interesting fact as it shows that how quickly videos can be uploaded on the internet and how it makes short work of how long it takes American news to show content.

3.       93% of American adults own a mobile phone
This fact again reiterates that as there are many people using phones they can also use the internet on their phone to access websites and this shows how technology is becoming better and smaller. You have the internet at your fingertips.

4.       The mobile phone device will be the world’s primary connection tool to the internet in 2020
This is again very interesting as in a decade they would be able to get rid of laptops and computers being the primary internet device.

5.       Media from a building could fit in a phone and in 25years will fit in a red blood cell.
If this can be achieved it would reiterate how great technology is becoming. And this could not be achieved in the 20th century.
